Working on this podcast with Wisconsin Humanities was one of my favorite creative projects. I have been volunteering with the Odyssey Project for years and lead storytelling workshops in Wisconsin prisons with the Odyssey Beyond Bars Project. In this season of Human Powered I had the opportunity to talk with people impacted by the justice system about the power of the humanities in Wisconsin prisons and in their lives. From a storytelling workshop at Oakhill Correctional Facility, to a poetry workshop with people who were formerly incarcerated, to a conversation with writers and editors of prison newspapers, to an art gallery, to organizing for the right to vote, we really dug into the importance of the humanities as tools for searching for meaning and understanding. With our hosts Dasha Kelly Hamilton, former Milwaukee and Wisconsin Poet Laurette and Public Historian Adam Carr, we shared remarkable stories of people inside and outside Wisconsin prisons who are using the humanities to overcome the dehumanization of incarceration. INSIDE STORIES PODCAST
I co-host Inside Stories with Takeyla Benton and we explore Madison one story at a time. Each episode we feature a story told in front of an audience at an event in Madison, invite the storytellers into the studio to tell us the story behind the story, and discuss how the story was put together. Check out what The Isthmus, Madison 365, and the Capital Times had to say about the podcast. You can find all the episodes on Spotify, Apple, or your preferred podcast platform.
